What We're Reading This Weekend 3/1/12

I'm reading the second book in George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series. This one is called A Clash of Kings.

I'm loving these books and the friend who recommended them! Martin paints a picture of a kingdom where the death of one king is the catalyst for a war with five people (so far) claiming a crown. I'm halfway through Book 2 and I'm still not sure which characters are trustworthy. I'm loving the plot-twists and the complexity of the characters.

I'm reading Mockingjay, the third book in The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I got the whole trilogy for Christmas and I can't seem to read them fast enough! The Capitol has no mercy and I'm hoping Katniss survives. I'm happy that the movie is in theaters in 25 days!

I'm also reading White Fang by Jack London for school. It's hard keeping track of two books!

Eating Clean

"80 percent of how your body looks is based on nutrition". Wow. As a runner, this statement from Tosca Reno's book Your Best Body Now was enough to get my attention. She goes on to state that 10 percent of my physique is determined by my exercise habits and the last 10 percent is left up to genetics.

So, my 10 mile run can be negated by a pizza? Yikes!

Tosca writes very openly about her own journey to a beautiful, fit life. She talks about finding motivation and giving ourselves permission to change.

This book really resonated with me as a mom who will be turning 40 this year. I love the message that it's never too late to be your best self. The success stories sprinkled throughout the book are particularly inspiring since most of the women profiled are older than 40 and looking fabulous!

As so often happens, reading one book inspired me to read another. Next came The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged which details the Eat-Clean Diet principles. Here are my favorites...

Eat Six Meals Per Day (One meal every two or three hours) I love a diet that makes me feel like I'm eating all day long!
Never Skip Meals, Especially Breakfast Again with the eating all the time? Ok!
Mix Proteins and Complex Carbs at Every Meal This one principle leaves me feeling full and satisfied which means less mindless snacking.

There are several more principles that all add up to healthy living. I've been following these principles for almost 2 weeks and so far I'm very happy with the results. My weight, which usually yo-yos all week, is stable. I have energy all day long and I feel great.

These books are well-written and very inspiring. They are full of information on health and well-being- not just weight loss.

Brenda’s life has taken twists and turns that are stranger than fiction. It always seemed as if she was just one phone call away from the next explosive change. One Call Away is the inspiring story of a woman who has prevailed through many of the circumstances that discourage women: tragedy, poverty, betrayal, and humiliation. But unlike most women, her life has been on display in the media.

Brenda's story is the story of so many women in America. She thinks she has found her prince, only to find that her story will not be a fairy tale. Instead, her life is full of real challenges and struggles.

Unfortunately, I could not identify with Brenda. She spends a lot of time discussing Neil and the suspicions surrounding him (did he hurt their son? is he cheating?) with no real resolution to some of the questions. There are many details included in the book that seem to have no real connection with the overall purpose of the book.

I was looking for a book about a woman's faith. This memoir did not included enough of what I was looking for.

Family Fitness

We’re convinced: a family that sweats together, stays together. There is something wonderful about sharing sweaty moments with others. We discussed how quickly friendships can turn intimate over a little sweat in the last chapter. Same theory with you and your family. Getting fit with your children will provide you with a number of opportunities to discuss some of the deeper things in life like the importance of hard work, how to overcome challenges and how to deal with success and failure. Especially with older children, sometimes it’s easiest to talk in abstractions—don’t think anything is lost on them.

To develop your identity as a fit family, there are a number of things you can do:

Make it fun for everyone. Especially for those of you with young children. Do what you can to make your kids love sport by providing a fun outlet for them to get physical. Consider an obstacle course, lawn sports, yard games and scavenger hunts to get little legs moving. Geocaching is a popular way for families to get outside and explore. Using GPS coordinates, geocachers take and leave an item from the hidden cache they find in parks and public land across the country. See www.geocaching.com for more information.
If you’re looking for more structured sport, find something everyone can participate in at his or her own level. Sports like martial arts and rock climbing are activities the whole family can participate in. A trip to the local beach for a lake swim or all-comers track meets work well, too. Sure, everyone’s skill levels will be slightly different, but sharing the passion for a particular sport or activity will bring everyone together. Better that than a television show, right?
Set a family goal. Train for a local 5K walk or family fun event. Join a family softball league or plan to ride your bikes a set distance for which you will all train. It doesn’t need to be a public event, but at some point an event can do wonders for everyone’s enthusiasm. Take the time to make T-shirts for the family to promote your own “team.” Reward the family with a celebration when you reach your goal.
Set individual goals and support each other. Give everyone (including mom and dad) the opportunity to set goals and compete with the rest of the family watching and cheering from the sidelines. This can be in the form of a soccer game, volleyball match or bicycle race. The important part is having the family there to support one another.
Cheer others on as spectators. Take the kids to local events. This doesn’t have to be in the form of professional athletics; head to the local high school or a nearby college to watch the competition. Get your kids cheering and make it fun.
Volunteer at an event. Take time as a family to support a local, national or global health and fitness organization. Donate your time at a local fun run by volunteering at a water stop. Get the whole family there and support your athletic community together.
Reward your children. This variation on the “chore chart” isn’t nearly as hard to keep going. Fill in sports or activities your kids enjoy and encourage them to earn stars by keeping active. When your daughter turns off the television and heads outside to play soccer without being asked, give her two stars. Simply rewarding positive, healthy choices encourages kids to continue making good decisions.

Bear Grylls books are Wild!

Are you a fan of Man vs Wild? We love Bear Grylls at our house! His show has taken a bit of slack for being too "staged" as a survival program. But, Bear himself is the real deal. A former soldier in the British Special Forces, he was seriously injured in a skydiving accident and went on to climb Mount Everest and cross the North Atlantic Ocean in a Rigid Inflatable Boat as well as many other adventures.

Plus, he's pretty cute!

Y'know, when he's not eating something disgusting...

On to his books!

"The Kid Who Climbed Everest" is the story of Bear's 1998 attempt to become the youngest British citizen to climb Everest. He talks his childhood friend, Mick into joining him for the adventure. I really like this book. This was my second read- the first was several years ago and I wanted to re-read it to make sure it was appropriate for Katie before she started. This adventure is just right for upper-elementary or Jr. High readers. Just a little warning- Bear goes into a good amount of detail explaining the "bathroom" situations on the mountain. (You know you want to know)

"Facing the Frozen Ocean" is the story of Bear's trip across the North Atlantic in the RIB. Once again, Mick joins Bear for the journey. (Being Bear's friend is starting to sound hazardous to one's health isn't it?) Five guys in a little tiny boat on the brink of hypothermia- it's so crazy as to be entertaining.

In both books Bear's writing is engaging and inspiring. He regales you with tales of his adventures and then talks about what he learned from the experience. Particularly in the Everest book, I got the idea that the man who went up the mountain was not the same man who came down.

The Help

"Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought."

I know I'm a little late on The Help but I had to add my voice to the many who already love it! The movie is getting rave reviews from many of my friends and I must insist that you also read the book.

The story takes place in Jackson Mississippi in 1962 & 1963 in the midst of the civil rights movement. Skeeter is a writer with a college degree and high hopes for career in writing. She also has a mother who would like her to settle down and find a husband. She wants to write something meaningful, important and publishable. She becomes concerned with the African American maids in Jackson. These are the women who clean the homes and raise the children of the white women in Skeeter's social circle. What are their stories? How do they feel about their jobs and the women they work for?

Interviewing these women proves difficult because most are unwilling to talk. Keeping secrets is part of the job and they want to stay employed. Skeeter's project is controversial to say the least.

Kathryn Stockett's book is full of beautiful, complex characters who are forced (some more easily than others) to connect with one another on a simple, human level during a time when only the differences between races seemed important.

The Help is easily the best new book I've read this year. I highly recommend it. Please note that it was recently released in paperback... You might want to invest in your own copy of this one. One read will not be enough.

That's me & Katie finishing the 1 mile kid's race at the 2009 Her Times 5K. This year, Katie will attempt to run the whole 5K! Yaay!

The Hot (Sweaty) Mamas chose our picture and Skirt Sports gave us a Wonder Girl Dress for Mom and a Wonder Kid Dress for Mandy! (I know, Katie is in the picture and Mandy gets the dress... but Katie has grown and the dress doesn't come in her size. I promise, I'll buy her an active-girl sort of gift)

The Dumpster: One Woman's Search for Love

I wanted to like The Dumpster: One Woman's Search for Love by Becky Due. I really tried. As far as summer reading goes, I'd rather keep it light. I don't want to learn too much about myself right now. With The Dumpster, there's no danger of that. Unfortunately I didn't learn much about the main character, Nicole either.

The Good: Becky Due clearly sees the absurdity in dating. She isn't afraid to thrust our main girl, Nicole into some silly situations. Nicole is a young single woman on a search for Mr. Right and she has the misfortune of having a smelly dumpster parked outside her bedroom window. She frequently shows us her frustrations in love by pitching things out the window into the dumpster.

The Bad: Nicole is too silly for me. She seems so desperate to find a guy that I found myself thinking that a truly good guy doesn't deserve to be with someone like Nicole. By the time we learn that she works in banking, I think she's too flighty to be in charge of my houseplants- nevermind my money. There are a few other minor characters who call her cell quite a bit, but seem to serve no real purpose.

The Ugly: Way too many toilet jokes. Ick.

Do I recommend this book? Not really. But, I'm open to reading other things by this author.

Mark DeMoss's book The LIttle Red Book of Wisdom was a pleasant surprise when it arrived from Thomas Nelson publishing's Booksneeze program.

DeMoss draws on his work experiences and his spiritual life to give us a book that is truly full of wisdom. While not a difficult read, I found myself putting this book down after a chapter or two so that I could let the message sink in. He devotes chapters to the idea of writing letters (y'know with an actual pen & paper?) and foregoing e-mail whenever possible. He encourages the reader to "think more, work less" while placing value where it belongs, on people and relationships.

High recommended read for young & old alike. This would also make a great gift.

Square Foot Gardening Update

SFG gone wild!

My square foot garden continues to grow! Yaay! It has produced many hot wax peppers, radishes and yummy cucumbers so far. There are ears of corn growing alongside red and yellow peppers. The bad news is that we are dealing with some blossom end rot on the tomatoes. But, a search of the web recommended adding Epsom Salt to the water in an effort to balance the ph in the soil. I tried it, and the tomatoes seem to be looking better. (fingers crossed here!) On the bright side, the cherry tomatoes are unaffected and delicious!

Runner girlfriends will like Hot (Sweaty) Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as a Fit Mom by Laurie Kocanda and Kara Thom.

I like the authors' practical approach to being a Fit Mom. The book includes suggestions for fitting workouts into family life as well as tips for handling spouses who may or may not support your athletic endeavors. I like the Mom2Mom sections where real moms 'fess up to some of the crazy things they've done in the name of post-natal exercise. (anyone else used your baby as a dumbell?)

The authors acknowledge the fact that some advice is just tired. "Work out while the baby sleeps" assumes that your baby will always sleep! Instead, the book offers suggestions for exercising with the baby and guilt-free motivation for leaving baby at home while you run, bike, swim etc.

I read this one on my Kindle, but I'm ordering another copy for my running partner tonight.

Summer Reads Part 1

I love to stumble upon a new author... it's sort of like making a new friend! Jennifer Weiner and I have spent many late nights getting to know one another lately! Here are the books I've consumed so far...

1. Fly Away Home Sylvie Serfer Woodruff is shocked when her senator husband has an affair with a young staffer. Her daughters Diana and Lizzie have both arrived at turning points in their lives as well and the three women are forced to reexamine their lives. Can they do it together or will they drive each other away? I really enjoyed this book and the three main female characters. They are flawed and beautiful- like so many of the women I know.

2. Good in Bed is not autobiographical, but the 10 year anniversary issue includes an interesting statement from the author on this, her first book. She points out similarities between herself and the main character, Cannie Shapiro as well as the challenges of publishing a first book. (she eventually parted ways with an agent who insisted that a book about a "big girl" wouldn't sell) Light & funny- great summer reading!

3. Certain Girls is the sequel to Good in Bed. Cannie's character is 10 years older and settled into her life, but her past is catching up with her. Although it wasn't quite as good as the first book, this is an enjoyable read which provides a welcome conclusion for the story.

4. Best Friends Forever cracked me up more than I expected. Valerie and Addie are childhood friends whose adult lives have gone in different directions. But, when Valerie thinks that she may have run someone over with her car at the high school reunion, Addie is the only person she can ask for help. The two go on the run- even though no one is chasing them and they are not even sure that they have killed anyone.

5. Little Earthquakes is the story of four women whose lives have intersected just as they are becoming mothers for the first time. I wasn't entirely thrilled with this book. Honestly, these moms are so different that I couldn't really imagine them liking each other at all. But, I did finish it and I've read worse.

6. Then Came You. I just downloaded it onto my Kindle. I'll have to tell you later!

Ways to Play #4... Gardening

I am not a gardener. You should know that right away, just in case you think I'm going to be full of gardening advice. Every summer I plant tomatoes in big pots on my deck. I know I need to water them, but that's really the extent of my gardening expertise. So, when two of my facebook friends started talking about Square Foot Gardening and posting pictures of their cute little gardens, I had to know more. Step one: get a book! (this my default setting when learning new stuff)

So I headed to the nearest bookstore and bought a copy of Mel Bartholomew's book All New Square Foot Gardening. I should take a moment to let you know that you can order the book on Amazon for about half of what I paid in the bookstore. You'll just need to be a little more patient than I was.

Mel's book is full of helpful diagrams and lists that helped a non-gardener like myself get started. Thanks to this book I even went to the home-supply store and used the phrase "1/2 inch steel conduit" and managed to sound like I knew what I was looking for. By the end of the first week I had constructed my first 4X4 box complete with trellis.

This was my square foot garden in early June

Yes, the corn is knee-high on the 4th of July!

Katie & Mandy got into the act and they each planted one square foot of radish seeds. This turned out to be great because radishes grow fast. (something else I didn't know) We've had several salads now that included the freshest radishes we've ever tasted!

I highly recommend Mel's book if you are a gardening novice like me. Is there helpful information here for gardening experts? I really don't know but it can't hurt to explore a new method, right?

The only thing I didn't love was Mel's insistence that you need to purchase his Mel's Mix for potting. I just couldn't imagine explaining to my husband why I needed to order dirt online.

Once the SFG was in, I couldn't help but notice that I still had a stack of pots that looked lonely. So, I put in a few extra pepper plants.

Just 2 weeks ago

Hubby ate one of these guys today- he said it was HOT!

Ways to Play #3... Knitting

That's right, I love to knit! Why? Well, I can do it on the couch and still chat with my family. And at the end of a project, I get that wonderful feeling that I've accomplished one thing in it's entirety. (someday I'll share my terrible feelings about laundry- it's never done- but that's another post)

I started knitting in December 2010 and finished my first scarf on New Year's Eve. From there I became a scarf-knitting maniac before branching into a matching hat:

And it wasn't long before I just had to make a cute little alien!

So, if you think you might like to knit here are some books to get you started:

1. Stich-n-Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook by Debbie Stoller. Ok, this title just cracks me up. But, it's a great beginner's guide to knitting. Lots of explanation here including diagrams and beginner patterns.

2. Knitting Without Tears is a wonderful book by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Appropriate for knitters of all levels. EZ says, "properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either."

3. If you have a Kindle, Knitting for Dummies is only .99! You really can't go wrong here!

Here are some online options for reading about knitting:

www.knittinghelp.com is full of high quality demo videos and articles.

www.ravelry.com is an ever-growing online community of knitters and crocheters. Think of it like facebook for people who love yarn. These people are experienced and generous with good advice.

I probably shouldn't tell you this- it's not good for your wallet- but if you get the knitting bug you'll want to get some good stuff. www.knitpicks.com is my guilty pleasure for shopping online. I have recently ordered yarn simply because it's beautiful. I have no immediate plans, but eventually I'll find something to knit with it. Also their Harmony wood needles are fantastic! Did I mention that they have great articles and videos too?

Ways to Play #2... Yoga

I love running, but it has never been easy for me. I'm not fast. I know people who say that and they really mean that they aren't elite or don't normally win their age group. I mean I'm slow... there are people who walk faster than I run. I'm ok with this- nobody ever said love was easy. But when it comes to yoga I'm in my zone! I can balance and twist and move and my body understands what to do. So on cross-training days, I usually hit the mat and find a happy place. An added bonus- Katie likes yoga too!

Here are some books that will get you started. I've added a couple of DVDs too in case you need to see the poses in action.

No Om Zone by Kimberly Fowler. If you're like me and you're looking to enjoy all the physical benefits of yoga, this is the book for you. There are chapters specific to body parts. I love the chapters on the Shoulders, Wrists and Hands since those areas get very tense after a whole day at the piano. You choose the chapter you need and there is a 10 minute workout for you.

Beth Shaw's YogaFit is a good read for many of the same reasons. There are workouts specific to your goals along with pages for each pose. It also has modifications so that you can work at your own ability level.

The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health is an all-inclusive guide to so many of the health issues that plague women. Headaches, menopause, back problems- yoga can give you some relief from them all.

Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown is my current favorite yoga DVD. No chanting and no rest- exactly what we'd expect from JM- makes this an intense workout. You'll work up a sweat. Your triceps will hurt... but maybe that's just me.

Sara Ivanhoes Yoga Body Makeover Series is a set of 5 20-minute workouts. Not as intense as Jillian's DVD, but you'll leave the mat feeling satisfied.

Fish by Gregory Mone. Adventure, Pirates and an unlikely hero. Do we really have to explain this one?

You already know I love to read. (why else would I blog about books?) But, there are plenty of other things I love to do in my free time. So, my next few posts will tell you what they are and direct you to my favorite books on the subject. If you'd care to join me in my other endeavors, you can read all about them. Here we go!

Way to Play #1...Running!

I'm currently piling up my running miles in order to prepare for the Presque Isle Half Marathon in July. 13.1 miles is a big deal for me, so when I'm not running I need to read for inspiration. Here are some of my favorite running books. Perhaps one of them will get you off the couch... or maybe send you to the couch to read about running. I don't know. By the way- if you like to walk for fitness, most of these books will have great information/inspiration for you as well!

Mile Markers by Kristen Armstrong. I already wrote an entire blog post about this one, but it bears repeating. Very interesting and inspirational.

Any book by John Bingham. Seriously, pick one. They're all good. This guy was once accused of ruining running as a sport because he insists that anyone can do it. You don't have to be one of the elites to love running and all of its' benefits. I am a slow runner so this guy is right up my alley.

The Non Runner's Marathon Guide for Women- I've also reviewed this one before but I still love it. It's more of a memoir than an actual guide, but it's funny and inspiring. Author Dawn Dais is committed to being a couch potato when she decides to run a marathon. Even if it doesn't inspire you to run a marathon, it will inspire you to get off your butt and do something that you never thought you could.

I'm pretty sure that Jeff Galloway's Book on Running is required reading. So read it, then get running.

Run Like a Mother... ok, I just love this title! But it's a good book with lots of practical info that feels like it comes from one of your runner girlfriends. For instance, did you know that one of the benefits of those running skorts is that you can pee in a bush and have built-in camo for all of your girl parts? There you go.

Mile Markers

My latest read is Mile Markers: The 26.2 Most Important Reasons Why Women Run by Kristen Armstrong. I downloaded it onto my Kindle on the same day that I signed up to run the Presque Isle Half Marathon. This turned out to be a smart purchase, because I believe that this book holds enough inspiration to take me through the training required to conquer 13.1 miles!

Kristen has a knack for describing both the joy and the pain of running. Like many amazing women I know Kristen juggles mommy-hood and professional responsibilities and has learned that a good run can be centering and therapeutic.

This book is a must-read for all the runner girls out there!

Incarceron

Incarceron by Catherine Fisher was a pleasant surprise. I read it in order to preview the book for Katie. It's becoming more difficult to find books that are on her reading level, but still age-appropriate. Incarceron definitely fits the bill.

Incarceron is a prison that is actually alive. It was designed to provide everything that the inmates would ever need. So, the inmates were sealed into Incarceron forever. Finn, a prisoner finds a key that turns out to be a link to the Outside. Claudia acquires it's match and the adventure begins.

This book is full of twists and turns- the reader will spend a lot of time trying to determine who the good guys are (there aren't many), who the bad guys are and which characters are in the grey area.

I highly recommend this book. I'm looking forward to the arrival of the sequel, Sapphique in my mailbox. I'll let you know what I think!

Thanks to a husband who loves documentaries, I have watched a lot of Titanic shows! I've heard so many stories of that fateful night and many of them have made mention of the band that played while the ship sank. But most mentions are brief and names are never mentioned. I'm sorry to say that I never really wondered who those musicians were. This book answered the question that I never thought to ask. If you are fascinated by the Titanic, its' victims and its' survivors- you will enjoy this book.

Who Is My Shelter? by Neta Jackson

The tables have turned and Gabby's estranged husband--who threw her out when she didn't live up to his image of a "corporate wife"--needs her in a way neither ever expected. He's begging for reconciliation, but Gabby has moved on, finding purpose and a future in the House of Hope. Not only has she found shelter for herself and her sons there, but she's able to help provide shelter for homeless moms and their kids.

This was not one of my favorite books. I found Gabby's character to be a bit abrasive. She ignores her kids in favor of her new purpose and can't seem to make her own choices. She seems to long for a relationship with a new man who clearly does not share her values while looking over her shoulder at the ex-husband she claims to loathe. Honestly, the characters in this book seem like such an unlikely mix that it's hard to imagine that they would even like each other, let alone spend extended amounts of time together. Halfway through the book I realized that I no longer cared if Gabby reconciled with her ex or not.

As an example of Christian fiction, I was turned off. At one point, Gabby spends an hour "crying out to God"- fine, except at this point she is supposed to be working at a busy shelter. Characters in this book seem to either be lost souls or terribly righteous folk who are constantly stopping conversations to pray. I was looking more for real people- the kind who seek God in their daily lives and sometimes struggle with their faith.

Left At The Altar by Kimberley Kennedy

TV journalist Kimberley Kennedy went from having it all to complete devastation, rejection, and public humiliation when, like a Lifetime movie scenario, her fiance left her at the altar. But her story did not end at the church. With candor and humor, Kimberley shares the personal details of her life as she journeys from devastation to a deeper understanding of what happened and how she found not only healing but hope to someday find her Mr. Right.

This is the book that I wish I would have read when I was young & felt rejected. Kimberley Kennedy does a great job of describing that awful feeling that everyone (unfortunately) knows. I am frankly amazed that she is able to use this horrible experience to help others. She discusses her relationship with great honesty, even looking back on warning signs that she chose to ignore. Her description of grief at the end of that relationship is very real. This is a good read, but I'm sure glad that I don't need it at this point in my life!

Unto the Hills- A Daily Devotional

Unto the Hills is a 365-day devotional by Billy Graham. I recieved my copy just as 2011 was beginning and so far I have been enjoying a meditation at the beginning of each day. The well-known minister draws from his lifetime of study, ministry and experience to offer a daily lesson. Each reading is about one page in length and includes a scripture plus a prayer. If your schedule is busy (like most) these readings will take only a few moments to inspire you and set you up for a worshipful day.

Keep in mind that these readings are straight from Billy Graham. They are not "feel good" inspiration or fluffy self-help talk. These are scripture lessons and sometimes they are a little bit of "fire and brimstone" sort of preaching. But, if you like Rev. Graham you'll love this book for the new year.

Voices of the Faithful

This brilliant, 366-day devotional features incredible stories of God's faithfulness in the face of uncertainty and danger, written by hundreds of missionaries worldwide.

I have not read all of this book yet as it is designed to be read over the course of a year. But, I read a few entries from each month in order to write this review. I really like that each day is written by a different missionary. Each one has a slightly different tone and the missionaries come from all over the world. Each reading also includes a scripture passing and a prayer for the day. At one page per entry, there is a short, inspiring thought for every day of the new year.

Book-ish Gifts

Here's my list of gift ideas for the grown-up women in your life. Or maybe you've already run yourself ragged buying for everyone else. In that case, choose one of these and give yourself a present!

1. Amazon Kindle- yes, I'm in love with mine. Books deliver in mere seconds! So of course, you'll buy more books. This is not a bad thing.

2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon- this is the first in her series. They're very long and very involved but so worth the time. Much of the country is snowed in anyway- what else are you going to do? Historical fiction plus time-travel plus romance. Good stuff.

3. Rachael Ray's Look & Cook is my favorite kind of cookbook. It's full of pictures. This is so helpful if like me, you just cannot imagine what the thing is supposed to look like! Include a set of Rachael's utensils and this is a gift you'll wish someone bought you. (hint, hint)

4. The Complete Works of Jane Austen- do I really have to explain why you need this? Be aware though- if you have a Kindle most of Jane's stuff is free. (one more reason to love my Kindle)

5. Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet- start here with Vision in White. Or be generous and buy all four- either way these books will make for a relaxing read.

The Secrets Beneath by Kathleen Fuller

Rebekah Yoder has always been curious . . . or nosy depending on whom you ask. When a Yankee stranger moves into the house next door, she’s fascinated. Who is this strange old man who never waves or smiles? When Bekah sees him digging holes in his back yard, she’s sure there is a case to be solved.

Katie read this book and she liked it at first. Rebekah lives in an Amish community in northeast Ohio, near Cleveland. Katie knew very little about the Amish and she found this fascinating. However, about halfway through the book she became a little bored. She didn't like the way Amish words were dropped in throughout the narrative sometimes. She said that the author uses the English word and then in the very next paragraph inserts the Amish word in italics. She said that it was a little distracting and would have preferred the author to just choose either the English or Amish words.

Rebekah is an interesting character. Her curiosity sometimes gets the best of her, but she is very well-behaved. In fact, she's so good that it's hard to get her adventure rolling along.

For Little Girls on the Nice List

Katie would like to recommend some books choices for the girls (and some for the boys) on the "NICE" list. And isn't that all of them?

1. Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor- we've said it before, we love the whole series. There is even a holiday title, Fancy Nancy- Splendiferous Christmas.

2. American Girl historical books- we particularly like Kit's series.

3. If she hasn't read Harry Potter yet, she'll have plenty of time over Christmas break! Don't want the whole boxed set? Get her started with Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone.

4. Nancy Drew! Who doesn't love a nosy girl?

5. Diary of a Wimpy Kid... these are just an easy, fun read for a lazy day!

6. We like Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, The Lost Hero... we'll just direct you to Rick Riordan's books and say, "go!"

7. For the littler girls on your list, try Junie B. Jones. (Katie's mom read these aloud and we both laughed!) The books on CD could make a long car trip more entertaining, too!

8. The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes- not too long, entertaining and fun!

So, take a break from shopping and relax with a good book!

Indulgence in Death

Indulgence in Death by J.D. Robb is the latest in her futuristic crime series starring Eve Dallas.

In case you don't know, J.D. Robb and Nora Roberts are one in the same. When Nora writes this series, she is J.D. Robb.

Full disclosure, Indulgence in Death was the first book I read on my new Amazon Kindle! My dear husband got the Kindle for my birthday and I pre-ordered Indulgence in Death and Happy Ever After. I was so excited when they became available, I turned on my Kindle and 2 new books appeared! O Happy Day!

I have been enjoying J.D. Robb's "in Death" series for some time now so Indulgence was a good place for me & my Kindle to get to know one another. The book did not disappoint and neither did the Kindle. The book had just the right balance between action and romance. The reading surface on the Kindle looks enough like print that I eventually forgot that I didn't have a book in front of me. I'm keeping both!

Happy Ever After

Happy Ever After is the 4th book in Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet. Parker Brown and her three best friends run Vows, a wedding planning service and venue. They are all passionate about their work and their friendship. In the previous three installments we saw Mac, Laurel and Emma find love. Finally, it's Parker's turn! Enter Malcolm Kavanaugh, a mechanic and self-made man who is unimpressed by Parker's status and money yet very impressedwith Parker and her legs!

I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series. If you like a good romance, you will too. Start with Mac's story in Vision in White. Happy Reading!

Dining with Joy by Rachel Hauck

Cooking show host Joy Ballard has a big secret. She can't actually cook. So when her show gets picked up by a cable network and brings a new producer into the mix, Joy gets pretty nervous. Add hot chef Luke Redmond to the mix and you now have the makings of a fun romance novel.

Dining with Joy is a delightful read full of interesting characters. Joy is conflicted in her career because she wants to be truthful and is worried about disappointing those who depend on her. She struggles to walk according to God's will in a man's world. Many will identify with a lead character who is living a life that she sort of fell into rather than a life she has chosen willingly.

Apparently, there are two previous book in Rachel Hauck's series based in Beaumont... I'm sorry I didn't know about them before I read this one, but I'll be remedying that problem soon.

The Heroes of Olympus Book One: The Lost Hero

I just finished Rick Riordan's new book The Heroes of Olympus Book One: The Lost Hero. Mr. Riordan does it again! He mixes history, mythology and modern day heroes and places to make a story that is full of adventure. Wonderful characters and exciting adventures are promised and the book does not disappoint.

Jason is a demi-god who suddenly finds himself in the back of a school bus with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He's holding hands with a girl named Piper who seems to think she is his girlfriend. His best friend Leo thinks that he is faking the amnesia to be funny. When Coach Hedge, the chaperone on this Grand Canyon field trip, turns out to be a satyr the fun really begins!

Readers of this blog will not be surprised that we loved this book. One word of warning though- read all five Percy Jackson books before you begin this one. We don't want you confused.

Transforming Church in Rural America by Shannon O'Dell

"It's time to break all the rurals" is the message Shannon O'Dell wants us to take from his book, Transforming Church in Rural America. O'Dell points out the many churches that dot the American countryside. They struggle with small attendance, small budgets and little expectation that anything else is possible. This book discusses many of the problems encountered by rural churches and offers inspiration for change.

Shannon O'Dell took on a rural church with 31 members and helped it grow into a multi-campus church of several thousand. Clearly he understands rural church communities and has had much success in his ministry. This book promises to give practical strategies to help rural congregations do the same. This reader did not find many.

I wanted to get excited about this book, I really did. But, halfway into it I still hadn't found the blueprint that was promised. Mostly, I found a lot of flippant comments about those rural church-members. I was also bothered by many references to rural pastors who are just "getting by". O'Dell seems to assume that if you pastor a small church it is because you are small-minded and without passion for your ministry.

There is a lot of talk about having a VISION for the church and it's growth, but very little discussion in regards to moving an entire congregation toward a single vision. Mr. O'Dell spends the entire first two chapters discussing his decision to move from big metropolitan ministry into "the sticks". But, I couldn't help but feel that when he got to the sticks he just built himself a big metropolitan ministry.

Max Lucado's latest book Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference challenges todays Christians to live a life of responsibility to one another. In a world where millions go to bed hungry each night, what are we doing to help? In Lucado's familiar, common sense tone we are taken back to the Jerusalem where Jesus and His apostles walked. We are shown how those pioneers of the church cared for the sick, the poor and the weary. Lucado submits that Christians must stop making excuses ("what good will it do?" "someone else will handle it") and help where they are able. He points out the importance of simply seeing the people around us, recognizing their need and responding. Chock-full of real-life examples, Lucado sets out to convince Christians that individuals can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of others.

I fully expected to enjoy this book as I have enjoyed so many Max Lucado books in the past. Although I was not completely disappointed, I must admit that this was not my favorite of his work. The message is certainly one that is needed in a hurting world and I applaud Lucado's call to Christians. However, the book lacks the theological depth of some of his other works.

The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners by Luanne Rice

The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners continues the story of Pell & Lucy, characters that I first met while reading The Geometry of Sisters. In this volume, 16 year-old Pell embarks on a journey to her mother whom she has not seen for 10 years. Lyra, Pell & Lucy's mother, has rebuilt her life on the Italian island of Capri. In order to move forward, Lyra, Pell & Lucy will all have to face the unspoken truths that lie in their past. New characters add to the landscape that Luanne Rice so ably paints. The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners is a satisfying ending to the story that began in The Geometry of Sisters.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Luanne Rice books. Women who recall being 16 years old and thinking that you know exactly who your mother is will enjoy watching Pell discover that Lyra has an identity outside of her children. A very enjoyable read.

Fancy Nancy... Halloween or Bust!

We are Fancy Nancy fans in this house! On the off-chance that you have little girls and you haven't met Nancy, let us explain.

Fancy Nancy is a very fancy girl who is part of a family that is decidedly not fancy. Nancy likes to dress fancy, her room is fancy and her books are exquisite! (that's a fancy word that means 'perfect') Did I mention that she likes fancy words?

We have enjoyed several of Jane O'Connor's books. We especially liked Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy. Yesterday, Mandy picked out Fancy Nancy... Halloween or Bust! on our trip to the bookstore. This one has a cute story, whimsical illustrations and stickers! What else does a 7-year-old need on a rainy day?

The Geometry of Sisters, by Luanne Rice

In Luanne Rice's book, The Geometry of Sisters we meet three sets of sisters and delve into the ways that they love and protect each other. The story is set in a prep school on a cliff in Newport, Rhode Island. Maura Shaw moves two of her children, Beck and Travis, to the school following the death of her husband. We learn that this move has caused one of her daughters, Carrie, to run away from home. Complicating matters is a rift between Maura and her own sister, Katherine.

I loved this book. Ms. Rice creates characters who are gifted and flawed. We see their struggles and feel empathy and sometimes even frustration for them. There is a little something in every main character that I could identify with. Relationships between women who love each other can be so complicated and Ms. Rice captures this angle with depth and grace.

Yesterday I bought The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners which continues the story of the third set of sisters, Pell and Lucy. I look forward to their story and I'll certainly tell you about it when I'm done.

I highly recommend The Geometry of Sisters. Now go read!

Books for the Moms!

I know, I know... we haven't blogged for awhile. Well, we've been busy reading! In this post I'll give you a couple of books for the Moms. Katie will check in later and update you on the kid-reading.

I spent 3 days on The Search by Nora Roberts. What a great read! This was one of those lock-myself-in-the-bathroom kind of books. Now I know, many people criticize Nora and say that her books are all the same. I say, why mess with a good thing? This one had all the ingredients of a good Nora book: a strong heroine who has survived strife in order to become who she is, a handsome, reliable (if grouchy) guy who's not looking for a relationship AND some external turmoil to keep the pressure on. I love the way most of her characters are self-employed- it really frees up their schedules so that they can quickly get on with the romance and adventure.

Another fun read just for my Mom-friends. My Formerly Hot LIfe (Dispatches from Just the Other Side of Young) by Stephanie Dolgoff. Stephanie has written a very entertaining book for those of us she refers to as "Formerlies". As in, Formerly Hot, Formerly Relevant, Formerly In-the-Know etc. etc.... She writes about learning who we Formerlies are- no longer young yet not quite old. You can sample her writing at her blog formerlyhot.com. My favorite part of this book referred to the changes in our friendship with other Formerlies. There's just not so much pressure when we look at our friends who have 3 kids under the age of 6. When you're barely alive, remembering my birthday month is just wonderful!

Mandy is the littlest girl in our family. Daughter to Rhonda, sister to Katie- she's seven years old and she also loves to read. She's a little disgusted with "baby" books and feels that she's ready to do whole chapters. Enter Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Now, Rhonda & Katie finished this series long ago but this is Mandy's first go-round. We decided to include a post on this because surely there are kiddos like Mandy who are just now discovering the wonder of this series.

Here's how it works- Mandy reads a page and then Rhonda reads a page. Katie listens because, well, it's fun! Here's what Mandy has to say about the book, "it's funnier than the movies. I don't know why they took the funny out." She also thinks Dudley is a jerk and the Dursleys are nuts. (perceptive girl, isn't she?) Tonight we'll begin chapter 3, so we'll keep you updated on Mandy's opinions here. This could take us awhile, but it will be worth it!

The Non-Cyclist's Guide to a Century...

The Non-Cyclist's Guide is the 2nd book by Dawn Dais. Her first book, The Non-Runner's Marathon Guide is one of my favorite books. (see previous review) I was very anxious to get into another sarcasm-filled book by Ms. Dais!

The good news: Dawn Dais has put together a great book that is full of information that will be helpful to cycling beginners. She gives advice on how to buy a bike that is right for you and how to accessorize without giving your credit card a stroke.

Also, the author appears to enjoy cycling a lot more than she enjoys running.

The bad news: While the author seems to like cycling better, this does not make for fun reading. Much of the charm of the first book was in the sarcasm! She observed the absurdities in the serious sport of marathon running and made us laugh at ourselves... not so in cycling. There are a few jokes about spandex and butt padding, but other than that she seems happy. She's funnier when there is a bit of misery involved.

Do I recommend this book? Sure... it's enjoyable. But if you're like me and you enjoy giggling at yourself, buy the running book.

Percy Jackson update

I have officially finished the entire Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I thoroughly enjoyed all 5 books and I was very sorry when they ended. There was plenty of action in The Last Olympian to keep me interested all the way to the finish. All of our main characters came to satisfying ends in the current conflicts and we left them looking forward to bright futures and the promise of more adventure.

Katie has just begun Sea of Monsters, the 2nd book in the series. She is positive that Tyson is not an average teenager- she thinks he must have some magical power. I'm refusing to tell her that she's right... she's anxiously flipping pages looking for answers to her questions.... Katie also wants to know if Grover will ever find the great god Pan. Again, my answer is "no comment".

The Non-Runner's Marathon Guide for Women

This summer I re-read one of my favorite running books, The Non-Runner's Marathon Guide for Women by Dawn Dais. Dawn talks like your favorite runner girlfriend except she's really not that run-happy. She is a self-proclaimed couch potato who decides to run a marathon. Non-runners out there- this is 26.2 miles. Not a jog around the block! In the process she learns a lot about herself and her sports bra. (a runner-girl's best friend)

Please note, I have tackled the half-marathon distance (13.1 miles in case you are math-impaired). I got to the finish line and couldn't imagine doing it all again! I really don't see a marathon in my future, but you never know! Really, that's the point of this book... you have no idea what you might be able to accomplish until you go for it.

Before I leave you thinking that this is some sort of self-help, find yourself book I'll assure you it's not. Dawn can spend whole pages discussing the pros and cons of spandex vs. short-shorts and she also contemplates getting more stoner friends instead of these run-happy people who insist on being mobile at 7:00 AM on a Saturday.

I highly recommend this book. When I checked Dawn's website for this post I noticed that she has another sarcasm-filled book for cyclists. I think I need to order it now.

Bullet

This one is just for the grown-ups. I just finished Bullet by Laurell K. Hamilton. This is part of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. I really enjoyed the first few books of this series, but frankly this one just wasn't up to par.

Here are my complaints-

Anita used to raise zombies for a living. She would get hired by people to raise their loved ones (for various purposes) and then put them back into the grave. These jobs would often lead to some greater adventure which Anita would embark on. Now there are vague references to Anita going to work, but we never really see her do her job.

Anita used to be torn between Jean-Claude (vampire) and Richard (werewolf). Plenty of tension between the three of them led to a lot of personal excitement in Anita's life. Now Anita has more boyfriends than she knows what to do with and she spends a lot of time sitting in Jean-Claude's living room discussing the logistics of all their relationships.

All of the action seems to occur in a metaphysical sort of way. Aside from one good fight in this one, there just wasn't much in the way of action. Anita seems to be turning into a very powerful human servant to Jean-Claude and a queen of the were-animals. (Although she doesn't really turn into anything- whatever.) Unfortunately, as she becomes more powerful she seems to be becoming less interesting.

Read it if you must, but don't buy it. One read will be enough. Save your money and visit the library.

The Frog Princess

Katie recently finished "The Frog Princess" by E.D. Baker. Princess Emma's parents never miss and opportunity to remind her that she is very "un-princess-like." When she encounters a frog in the pond, she refuses to kiss him... She kisses the frog in order to escape an arranged marriage with Prince Jorge. Somehow the spell reverses and Emma turns into a frog. And they're off on an adventure to return her to human form.

Katie did enjoy this book and is looking forward to reading the sequel "Dragon's Breath".

Do they all live happily ever after? We can't tell you everything! Go read the book!

Percy Jackson & The Olympians

This summer we're reading the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Yes, we're a little late getting to these but we're enjoying them immensely! We got hooked on the movie when it appeared on video and that led us straight to the library. Book one The Lightning Thief is very different from the movie (isn't that always the way?). K & I were very pleased to meet more Olympians as we got into the book.

Percy is an unlikely hero- this 12-year-old has been kicked out of 6 schools in 6 years. He's dyslexic AND he has ADHD. He lives with his mom and his terrible, smelly step-father. So imagine his surprise when he discovers that he is a Son of Poseidon, the God of the Sea!

I love that children will be exposed to characters from Greek mythology in a modern day adventure.

If you enjoyed the humor and adventure that you found in the Harry Potter books, this series is for you.
